Have you been thinking about moving to a retirement home for a while and you finally decided to take the plunge? Once you choose the right neighbourhood, the kind of residence you prefer and you verify the services and activities available to you, all that’s left to do is move in. How can you make this new place, whether it’s an apartment or studio, feel like home? Here are a few decorating tips that will help you make a house into a home.

Decorating using photographs

Get pictures from trips you’ve taken, family pictures or childhood memories framed. They can help you to feel at home in your space. Concentrate your pictures in a corridor, such as a hallway or alongside the stairs. Try printing different sizes of pictures and orienting the frames in different ways to bring a touch of chic style to your space.

Bright spaces

Brightness brings warmth and makes your space a more welcoming environment. Make the most of the natural light coming from your windows by installing blinds or curtains that are easy to open. Add other light sources and brighten your space: light garlands, bright ceiling colours, lamps and light fixtures. There are so many possibilities for you to combine and choose from.

Accessorize

Don’t forget to use accessories to decorate your new space. Pillows, rugs, curtains, tablecloths, side tables… Mix designs and colours to give your space a bit of life. When decorating, adding a few accessories can bring about a lot of change. And speaking of accessories, you could use some scented candles that have a scent that brings back pleasant memories. You’ll feel at home right away!

Plants

What could be better than a little bit of greenery to bring your space to life? With indoor plants, you don’t necessarily need to have a green thumb to make your space rich with plant life. There are all sorts of plants that need very little maintenance. Nevertheless, we tend to opt for real plants.

Spruce up your walls

Aside from pictures, you can spruce up your walls in other ways too. If you’re allowed to paint in your residence, why not decorate a wall or two in your apartment? You could paint, put up wallpaper or even add some decals. Adding a little colour here and there to make your place feel like it’s just right for you isn’t that hard after all. A handy tip: when painting or putting up wallpaper, get help from a professional.

If you want to feel at home in your new place, you shouldn’t try to recreate the look you had at your house. Maybe your likes and dislikes have changed and will continue to change. Focus on what makes you feel comfortable, what style you like and make your space 100% you.
