Special care units are secure residences where the ability to enter and exit the premises is restricted. Inside of special care units, residents can wander around without having to be medicated or physically confined.
Those involved in the operation of senior’s residences and long term care facilities believe that special care units need to be created in the CHSLDs (long term care facilities) in anticipation of the increase in those with Alzheimer’s in the coming years.
At the moment, there are very few places in Quebec that have these types of adapted spaces. “Entire establishments will have to be adapted to meet the staggering number of people who will need this kind of care.”
In Quebec, approximately 120,000 seniors aged 65 years and over suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other related illnesses.
1. 74,700 women
2. 30,900 men
- There are more women who suffer from this disease than men. They represent two thirds of those over 65 years of age that are suffering from the disease. Moreover, most caregivers are women.
- By 2031, it is estimated that more than 187,500 people in Quebec will have Alzheimer’s disease or a related disease.
- In Montreal alone, more than 30,000 families are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related disease.
