Plan ahead

1 to 2 months prior to moving:

  • Notify your landlord that you are moving

You are required to cancel your lease 3 months before its end date. If you haven’t already done so, you may sublet your unit or assign your lease by notifying the unit’s owner in writing.

  • Plan your move either on your own or with the help of professionals

If you are thinking of moving by yourself, don’t forget to book a moving truck.

If you are moving to a new city, you should compare the prices between moving by yourself and having movers take care of your move. The cost of mileage adds up quickly and it’s not always an option to return the rental vehicle to another destination.

Other helpful tips
• Use your frozen products a few weeks before leaving.
• Go through your personal belongings and de-clutter.
• Sell what you don’t plan to bring with you to your new place.
• Pack your personal belongings in boxes and label each one with its contents and which room they should be placed in.
• Ask someone to take care of your pet for the day of the move.

1 week before moving:

  • Contact the moving company
Take the time to check what time the movers will arrive at your dwelling. Ensure that the company has the exact addresses for the departure and arrival destinations.
  • Put your valuables in a safe place
Place your photo albums, jewellery and important documents in one place and bring them with you on the day of your move.
  • Notify the relevant authorities of your move
Report your change of address. Read our article on Who needs to be notified of your change of address for helpful tips.

3 days before moving:

  • Collect your new keys
Make sure that you have the keys for your new home with you before your move begins.
  • Prepare some things for the first night
Fill a bag with some of your essentials (clothes, toothbrush, soap, etc.) so that you don’t have to search for them on your first night.

2 days before moving:

  • Do some laundry
Wash your sheets and blankets so that they are clean and dry for your first night in your new home.
  • Empty your household appliances
Don’t forget to empty and unplug your fridge, freezer, washer and dryer. While you’re packing, take the time to clean your stove and microwave.

The day before moving:

  • Prepare a snack
Moving day is a challenge. That’s why it’s a great idea to have prepared something to eat in advance for yourself and those who are helping you. Fill up some bottles of water and make some sandwiches, etc.

Moving day:

  • Take one last look around your place
Once everything is loaded in the moving truck, make sure nothing has been left behind. Take one last look around: open the closets, look at the walls and light fixtures.
  • Be the first to arrive
If you can, arrive before the movers to inspect the new accommodations and decide where you want to place your belongings.

That’s it. Now you’re all set. Good luck with your move!
