Often children who live out of town become stressed when they find their parents have lost autonomy, and there is little they can do since they do not live in the same city. For peace of mind they finally come to the conclusion that their parent would be better off in a seniors residence, where they can have access to a nurse and care if needed, as well as the socialization of being around others, which will keep their minds more active and break the isolation of living alone.

It is not always easy to convince a parent to move, as change is often frightening especially for the elderly, and many have preconceived notions of living in a hospital environment or worse, without realizing the many, many options of private residences that are available.

It is very difficult to navigate the multiple choices of residences we have here in Quebec, which is why a residence advisor is a great resource for them. Based on the individual needs, the budget, and the area most desired, as well as taking into account the individual preferences both large and small, a residence advisor who is familiar with all the residences in the area can help put their minds at ease and simplify the search for them.

I am often asked what is the difference between a private and a public seniors residence.

The public residences can only be accessed here in Quebec if they have been hospitalized and can no longer return home alone or by their local CLSC where they would assess the care and services required, and then if deemed necessary, place them on a waiting list for either a CHSLD (long term care facility) or an Intermediate Resource (IR).

The private sector has many more options, which range from fully autonomous residences, Semi-Autonomous, Assisted Living, Intermediate level care Resource, Memory care, and CHSLD for full care.

All the private residences in Quebec must obtain a certification of compliance and adhere to all the requirements of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, and are regularly monitored and checked.

The greatest advantage for a senior who moves to a private residence in Quebec, besides the fact that the rent is much more affordable than anywhere else, is the tax credit that they will receive from the Quebec government each month. This is why there are many seniors who live outside of Quebec chose to move here in order to live in a private residence, which becomes much more accessible to everyone with the benefit of receiving the monthly tax credit.

I would be happy to further discuss the many options and benefits that are available.
