Moving can be an emotional and difficult transition for many retirees and seniors. Because it takes a lot of time, energy and preparation, moving needs to be well planned and thought out. It’s helpful to reflect on things beforehand and ask yourself some questions to facilitate your move.
Here are some questions that you can ask yourself to get started:
1. Will my furniture fit in my new place?
2. How much storage space is there for my things?
3. Will there be enough room for me to get around without any obstacles in my new home?
4. Is the space safe?
5. How will I know where my things are without having to look in every box?
6. What should I do with the belongings that I can’t bring with me?
7. Did I inform all the necessary people of my plan to move?
8. Do I have people to help me with all the steps listed above?
You can answer these questions quickly by doing the following things:
1. Make a floor plan
2. Sort through your things
3. Make list of your moving boxes and what they contain
4. Donate or sell your belongings (have on hand a list of the places that accept donations nearby)
5. Change your address
6. Contact your family, friends, volunteers or a moving company to help you with your move
You should start sorting through your things a few months before moving so that you can go through every room in your home and organize all your stuff before you leave.
If you follow the abovementioned steps, you will be on the right path to have a successful and stress-free move to your new home.
