To check the certification status of a private residence, you can check the Registre des résidences privées pour aînés. You can search by typing the name of the residence to find out if it’s in the directory. All certified residences can be found in the directory.

Why certification?

Residences are certified so that the public is able to verify that they comply with the requirements of the Regulation respecting the conditions for obtaining a certificate of compliance and the operating standards for a private seniors’ residence.Certification standards also ensure that those living in a residence receive safe, excellent services.

Depending on the category and size of theresidence, the Regulation deals with many themes concerning the services offered as well as the residents’ rights.

How does a residence go about obtaining a certificate of compliance?

The certification process is identical in all regions of Quebec.

1. All new operators of private residences for seniors must obtain a temporary certificate issued by the Agence de la santé et des services sociauxin the residence’s region (Agence).
2. The body that is responsible for compliance verification, the Conseil québécois d’agrément (CQA), will visit the residence and submit a report to the Agence.
3. After examining the whole file, the Agence makes a decision on whether to issue a certificate of conformity or to renew it.
4. The Agencebegins the process of renewing the certificate of compliance every three years.
