Choosing a senior’s residence that will ensure your wellbeing or the wellbeing of a loved one is an important decision that merits particular care. Since January 2015, Résidences Québec provides guidance to families looking for a residence that suits the needs of those with a loss of autonomy.
The Role of Housing Counsellors
Housing counsellors accompany seniors and their families through the process of finding accommodations that will meet the degree of care they need within the network of private residences certified by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux.
Housing counsellors will evaluate the needs of seniors according to their psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional abilities. Seniors and their families can rely on the housing counsellor’s guidance while visiting residences and throughout the process of choosing the right accommodation:

•  One-on-one meeting in the home, at the hospital or rehabilitation centre in order to evaluate the needs of the senior.
• Conduct research and make recommendations of certified residences.
• Assistance while visiting residences chosen by you (semi-autonomous or non-autonomous, CHSLD, Alzheimer’s, etc.).
• Information concerning financial aid, government tax credits, etc.
• Support up until admittance to the residence and assistance with terminating a lease.
